Many common household items and foods are dangerous to your dog or cats health.

Rodent poison and insectisides are the most commonly reported causes for animal poisonings but did you know certain foods can also poison your pet.

 

Raisins and Grapes: cause acute renal failure in many dogs. The ASPCA reports roughly 150 cases of toxic ingestions per year caused by raisins or grapes.

 

Alcoholic beverages can cause intoxication resulting in coma or death.

 

Antifreeze that contains ethylene glycol attracts animals because it has a sweet taste. It is deadly if consumed even in small quantities. One teaspoon can kill a 5 - 7 pound animal. Other dangerous chemicals include de-icing salts for melting snow and ice.

 

Lawn fertilizers and insecticides are extremely dangerous to your pet. Also some plants such as Lily of the valley, oleander, rhododenderon, azalea, yew and fox glove are considered cardiotoxic or poisonous to the heart. Rhubarb leaves and some types of lilies can cause kidney failure. Mushrooms and cycads (a palm like, woody plant) can result in liver failure. Other dangerous plants are mistletoe, geraniums and poinsettas.

Chocolate especially semi sweet and bakers chocolate can cause seizures, vomiting, diarhea, hyperactivity, muscle spasms, coma and death. Coffee can also cause hyperactivity, hyperventilation and heart related problems.

Macadamian nuts can cause vomiting, lethargy, hyperthermia, abdominal pain, stiff joints, lameness and tremors.

Ibuprofen as well as other painkillers and medications can be deadly. Never give your pet medication without consulting your veterinarian.

 

Other dangerous household items include:

Candy containing the sweetener Xylitolonions, apple seeds, walnuts,yeast dough, moldy foods, tea, apricot and cherry pits, hops and tomato leaves.
